Our Ethos
At Liten Hobbit Stuga, nestled on five vibrant acres in Astoria, Oregon, we are more than a farm—we are a living promise to the earth and each other. Our ethos is rooted in the belief that by nurturing the land with intention, joy, and respect, we can cultivate abundance, connection, and hope. Guided by permaculture principles, a passion for biodiversity, and a commitment to community, we strive to create a sanctuary where nature and humanity thrive in harmony.
Permaculture as a Way of Life : We see the land as a partner, not a resource to be tamed. Inspired by the wisdom of permaculture, we design our farm to mimic nature’s resilience and diversity. From our food forest in the Upper Meadow to the Berry Patch bursting with heirloom strawberries, every plant, animal, and microbe plays a role in a self-sustaining ecosystem. We layer perennials, annuals, and native species to build soil health, conserve water, and invite pollinators, ensuring our farm flourishes in Astoria’s misty embrace. Our chaos gardening—sowing seeds with trust in nature’s design—reflects our belief that beauty and abundance arise from collaboration with the earth.
Guardians of Heirloom and Rare Species : Every seed we plant carries a story—of cultures, climates, and generations past. We are proud stewards of heirloom, heritage, and rare plant varieties, from North Georgia Candy Roaster squash to Garden Peach tomatoes, preserving genetic diversity and flavors lost to industrial agriculture. Our rare-breed chickens, like the gentle Silver Bielefelders and Swedish Flower Hens, are partners in this mission, their colorful eggs and unique traits enriching our farm’s tapestry. By cultivating these living legacies, we honor the past while sowing hope for a resilient future.
Sustainability in Every Step : Small actions ripple outward. We weave sustainability into every corner of Liten Hobbit Stuga, from repurposing tin cans as seed starters to irrigating with nutrient-rich fish tank water. Grass clippings and cardboard become fuel for our woodstove, and fallen hemlocks are left to nurture forest regrowth. Our dry river bed channels runoff while showcasing native sedges, and our mushroom forest fosters fungal networks beneath the soil. These practices are our pledge to tread lightly, reduce waste, and give back more than we take.
Community as the Heartbeat : Liten Hobbit Stuga is a gathering place, a haven where neighbors, dreamers, and dog lovers unite. Through Pop’s Dog Camp, we welcome visitors to experience our permaculture paradise, where sunflowers sway and chickens cluck. Our seed library, launching in fall 2025, will share heirloom and rare seeds with the Astoria community, empowering local food sovereignty. Inspired by mutual aid, we organize events like the Astoria Regatta Festival to celebrate shared abundance, from farm-fresh feasts to handcrafted herbal perfumes. Here, community is not just a word—it’s the heartbeat of our mission.
A Joyful Commitment : Above all, we believe in joy. The joy of dirt under our nails, the laughter of visitors meeting our chickens, the quiet awe of watching trilliums bloom. Liten Hobbit Stuga is a place where hard work meets play, where sustainability meets celebration, and where every step forward is an invitation to grow together. Join us on Wiley Lane to sow, share, and thrive—because a better world begins with the seeds we plant today.
